latest standings for the NFC South
By: Jake Rajala
The NFC South is filled with complexity. It’s hard to foresee who will win the division. With that said, I will do my very best to project who will win the NFC South and who will place behind the winner. Let’s begin.
4. Atlanta Falcons
I don’t love Michael Penix Jr. He went 1-2 and he only threw 3 touchdowns to 3 ints. I feel that they will turn back to Captain Kirk after 3-5 games in the season. The Falcons are also 23rd in PPG allowed. On the bright side, they have Bijan Robinson and Drake London. I’d like to see the Falcons draft a QB with a higher grade than Penix in the draft next season.
3. New Orleans Saints
Spencer Rattler went 0-9 last season and Tyler Shough can’t separate himself from Rattler. They also have a defense that has washed up captains in Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyrann Mathieu. Taysom Hill is also more injury prone at this stage in his career. At least, I have faith in Alvin Kamara. I still believe that Kellen Moore is a genius and he shouldn’t be on a short leash.
2. Carolina Panthers
The Panthers don’t have CMAC anymore, but they can replace him with two not one ecstatic RBs (in Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowdle). Bryce Young should be pleased that he improved in the back-end of last season. He should climb the ladder with Tetairoa McMillan joining their WR group. They also signed Hunter Renfrow earlier in the off-season.
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs QB-WR duo is one of the best in the league. Baker Mayfield can lean on Evans to dominate in the redzone. The drawback is that Baker led the league in interceptions because he stares at his target too long, as if it’s backyard football. The Bucs defense has Lavonte David, Vita Vea, Antoine Winfield Jr. and Haason Reddick.
Honestly, the NFC South is one of the least impressive divisions in the NFL. It’s no coincidence that the Bucs dominate their division and have won it the last four times.
If there is growth from Michael Penix Jr, Bryce Young, and Tyler Shough, this division could flip from the worst to one of the best.
