Should the Saints trade for Kirk Cousins?

Who will trade for Kirk Cousins?

By: Jake Rajala

It’s well known that the New Orleans Saints don’t have a veteran quarterback on their roster. Jake Haener is the oldest QB and he’s 26 years old. Haener or the other Saints QBs haven’t won a game. They are the only team in this situation. With that said, it’s been speculated that the Saints could trade for a QB.

Should the Saints trade for Kirk Cousins?

I don’t believe that the Saints should trade for him. Sure, the Falcons would love the trade because it would sink us. Usually, teams don’t like to trade key players within their division. I believe this would be an exception for ATL.

Cousins was benched for Michael Penix Jr. The second year QB (Penix Jr.) went 1-2 and only threw 3 TDs to 3 ints. I don’t believe that a second year version of Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough could be worse than Cousins. Plus, a young QB could get key time to be in a game and go through growing pains.

Cousins is also 36 years old. I believe we’re seeing a demise of him that was similar to Matt Ryan. This would be the opposite direction that Tom Brady went in his late 30s.

Cousins could be an admirable back-up who could make plays when the defense has little preparation for him. If he wants to be the best back-up in the league, he would have to accept that type of offer.

If Cousins retires, he could be called up in an emergency situation by a playoff team. We all heard that Kyle Shanahan was going to call Phillip Rivers if they made the Super Bowl with a broken Brock Purdy a couple of seasons ago.

Cousins has had a hell of a career. This doesn’t mean he should play forever or expect an elite team to show him the money. He can compete with a team that hasn’t already committed to a QB, or try to put his marbles in a team that has little talent at QB or has an injury-riddled QB.
