Gardner vs Revis
By: Jake Rajala
Sauce Gardner was just made the highest paid cornerback of all time. This isn’t bad for a 24 year old! He’s proven to be an elite, consistent CB. With that said, he’s drawn comparisons to Darrelle Revis. After all, Revis was a Jet and an elite CB. So, I’m going to unfold which CB was better.
Revis (first three seasons):
14 ints and 64 pass deflections
Gardner:
3 ints and 40 pass deflections
The stats don’t tell the whole story, however. Gardner is a lockdown CB, and teams barely test him. He has a 91.9 PFF coverage grade since 2022, which leads the league!
Each Jets CB has made first-team All-Pro in two his their first three seasons.
I have to give the edge to Revis. Not only was he “Revis Island”, where he erased an opposing WR, but he was a turnover machine. Garnder only has had three ints in his young career thus far.
I also don’t like that he was ranked as PFF’s 46th CB last season (with a grade of 70.2). This isn’t exactly the momentum I’d like to see from a young CB.
It will also be incredibly hard for Gardner to match the resume of Revis when it’s all said and done. He has made seven Pro Bowls. Furthermore, he has played 11 seasons in the NFL! Revis also has a Super Bowl ring. Gardner may have to play for a new team if he wants to taste a Lombardi trophy.
I believe that there will be some undeserving comparisons to Revis because they both bleed Jets nation. However, Sauce isn’t convincing enough to be better than Revis, who is a Top-3 CB of all time. I’d like to see Gardner lead the league in pass deflections or interceptions, even if he has limited opportunities.
