Is it too early to trade Tyler Shough?
By: Jake Rajala
Tyler Shough was picked by the Saints with their second-round draft pick. Everybody was shocked they chose Tyler over Shedeur Sanders. There was also a concern about his age, as he turns 26 in September.
Fast forward to early August of 2025, Tyler isn’t playing like their franchise QB. Saints writer Jeff Duncan said that “Tyler Shough might have overseen/directed the worst 2-minute in the history of the NFL during situational work late in the practice.”
With the first team offense yesterday, he went 5-12 and threw an interception.
Shough is being outplayed by Spencer Rattler. Spencer has quality arm talent and more poise than last season, but he’s not exactly a Top-20 QB. He had an impressive 2-minute drive against the Washington Commanders last season, but he still went 0-9 on the season.
Rattler didn’t have Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed in his back pocket, however.
With Tyler struggling and showcasing average arm talent, the question begs to ask: is it too early to trade Tyler?
I don’t believe it’s early to trade him. There happens to be another rookie QB that sits in a crowded room. His name is none other than Shedeur Sanders. I’m not saying the Saints could swap QBs. The Saints may need to throw in a late round pick, given Tyler’s struggles.
There are other project QBs that could be traded for Tyler. Justin Fields has struggled and may need a new change of scenery. The Steelers may want a young QB to be groomed to replace A-Rod next season (assuming he retires).
I believe it may also be the right time to trade him, as I believe he’s on pace to struggle in pre-season games. His trade value would most certainly drop if that occurs.
Tyler could still shine for the Saints or a new team. After all, Cam Newton really played poorly in pre-season and then played like an OROY QB when the season started. Perhaps this is just a bump in the road and Shough turns it around.
