Things we learned from the Saints-Jaguars

By: Jake Rajala

The Saints-Jaguars game was quite the thriller. Sadly, there wasn’t overtime, as the game ended in a tie of 17-17. With that said, I’m going to unfold a five things we learned from the game.

Mason Tipton

Mason Tipton had the best production on the field between the two teams. He finished with six grabs for 100 yards. He had a very impressive 45 yard catch from Spencer Rattler. His efforts come after catching a 54 yard pass from Shough for a touchdown in Week 1 of preseason. Tipton looks like a lock to make the roster.

Trevor Lawrence

Aside from a fumble that was recovered by the Saints, T-Lawrence had himself a day. He finished with 8 for 10 and a touchdown. This is promising, especially after Lawrence was battered and injured last season. He just needs to not take wrongful hits and be consistent.

Kendre Miller

Kendre Miller was beaten badly behind the line of scrimmage, but he kept breaking tackles. Miller finished with six carrier for 21 yards. He is going to be the goal-line RB, due to his physicality. I believe he will be the long-term answer at RB after Kamara retires. He looked like he was worth a third round pick.

Jaguars DL

As noted above, the Jags DL beat up Miller behind the scrimmage. It’s impressive they mopped the floor against the Saints OL. I’d love to see Walker take the next step and be All-Pro. I’d like to see another DE opposite Walker, such as Jadeveon Clowney.

Pass rush

The Saints back-up edge rushers couldn’t get home during the game. It’s worrisome, to say the least. Chase Young is injury prone and Cameron Jordan is blatantly washed up. They need to find better depth in my opinion.

Honorable Mention:

Kelvin Banks Jr.

Kelvin Banks Jr. has been playing like one of the best left tackles in football. It’s even more impressive that he’s a rookie! (see his production below).
