Jordan Reed reflection
By: Jake Rajala
Jordan Reed was once regarded as one of the most athletic tight ends in the league. As a rookie, he recorded 499 yards and three touchdowns in nine games. He really started to heat up in his third season. In his third year, he unleashed 11 touchdowns and 952 yards, while missing a pair of games. He also accomplished this without a stud QB.
He made his first Pro Bowl in 2016, where he notched 686 yards and six touchdowns. He did this while missing four games.
Reed was gifted, but he had injury issues (as noted above). He had 558 yards in 2018, but he missed three games. His last season was in 2020. In 2020, he only had 231 yards. I took him in fantasy given that he was an athletic freak and that he would be in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Well, it didn’t pay off.
A concussion led to his demise. He had six concussions in the NFL and one in college. Reed really suffered from injuries. He missed at least two games in each season.
Gronk was another athletic freak that couldn’t escape injuries. He missed a Super Bowl, too.
I would have loved to see Reed play more with the 49ers. He was only in his early 30s, which isn’t too old for tight ends.
Gronk, Jimmy Graham, and even Tony Gonzalez played with elite QBs. As a tight end football fan, I would have loved to see Reed play with the likes of Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers.
