Grading the Carson Wentz signing

Wentz signing

By: Jake Rajala

It seemed like all hope was lost for the former NDSU quarterback Carson Wentz. Well, a Super Bowl contender (known as the Minnesota Vikings) reeled in the veteran signal-caller. Wentz will be the backup to J.J. McCarthy.

Wentz is no longer a Pro Bowl QB, if it wasn’t obvious. However, he can be a fine game manager. He is 1-1 in his last two seasons. He has impressive arm talent, and he can throw dimes on the run.

Two solid head coaches in Andy Reid and Sean McVay brought in Wentz, which says he still has talent. Wentz is still 32 years old, so he should have some of the fountain of youth.

We’ve witnessed Geno Smith turn things around in his early 30s. Sam Darnold transcended into a Pro Bowl QB in his late 20s.

Wentz was a Pro Bowl-caliber QB in 2021. He unleashed 27 TDs to 7 ints and led his team (Indianapolis Colts) to a 9-8 record.

Ultimately, I would give this signing an A.

It may seem like Wentz is washed up, which is partially true. Nonetheless, he is the best FA QB available. He is also not as old as the likes of Matthew Stafford or Geno Smith.

I loved that the Vikings traded Sam Howell. They switched QBs (between Wentz and Howell) have got draft picks out of the equation.

Kevin O’Connell turned Kirk Cousins into a Pro Bowler. If Wentz gets called to start, I have no doubt that he will play his best football since his prime in Philly. Of course, Vikings fans are hoping they don’t have to see Wentz play.
