Is Caleb Williams tradeable?

Caleb Williams outlook

By: Jake Rajala

The former first overall pick Caleb Williams has been up and down this preseason. There have been rumors of him being benched. This comes after Tyson Bagent was given a two-year contract extension for $10 million dollars. So, the question resides: Is Caleb Williams tradeable?

Absolutely.

It may even be better to trade him early in the season if he has a messy beginning in 2025. If they play through with him, they may be shopping for mid to late round picks late in the season. I believe he’s still worth an early pick, such as a second-rounder.

Furthermore, Ben Johnson has enough confidence in himself to grow a QB that has the right awareness and arm talent. If they can have a QB that’s 50/50 when it comes to awareness and arm talent, that’s all Johnson needs. He would prefer that combination over 0/100, with zero pocket presence and above-average arm talent.

If the Bears ship out Williams, it won’t be easy to find a quality, young QB. Sure, Williams can’t sit in the pocket for several seconds and take a sack. Well, he does still have the ability to throw darts on the run.

Perhaps the Bears can make a trade with the Saints. They carry Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough. A QB exchange with mid-round picks could be intriguing.

I’d love to see both parties (Bears and Williams) be somewhat patient. I don’t want to see Williams play half the season if he struggles early on (as noted). If he does struggle, I’d like to see a trade versus a FA signing.

I’m not saying Williams’s career is over if he struggles more. I just believe that Ben Johnson wants to not see a gifted QB on the bench. It would rather be smart to get capital for him. Plus, the Bears have to realize that three NFC North teams made the playoffs last season, so they need to be ready to hit ground running.
