5 replacement options for Brock Purdy

Best backup options for Brock Purdy

By: Jake Rajala

It’s been well-noted that Mr. Irrelevant, also known as Brock Purdy, will be out for 2-5 weeks. This is a massive blow to a well-rounded, gutsy squad. So, I’m simply going to lay out five replacement options for Purdy.

Mac Jones

Perhaps the best fit is their current QB2, Mac Jones. He has the scheme down, and he has plenty of upside. But, it should be said that he wasn’t exactly a stud as of late. He went 2-5 last season and 2-9 in the season before. Kyle Shanahan will need to lean more on CMAC with him (or any backup QB).

Tyrod Taylor

Shanny can really get creative with the dual-threat ability of Tyrod Taylor. After all, RG3’s magical rookie season happened under Shanny. Let’s not forget that Taylor was supposed to start over Justin Herbert until a medical accident set him back.

Trey Lance

Not only did Trey Lance play quite well in the preseason, but there is chemistry with Shanny and the 49ers. He went 1-1 in his rookie season with the 49ers. It was a small sample size. I’d like to see more game action, so he can show his real potential.

Andy Dalton

Shanny has made it clear that he likes Andy Dalton in the past. The Red Rifle isn’t completely washed up. He still has a few seasons before he turns 40. Dalton is likely a lot cheaper than the likes of Lance or another young, complex QB.

Mason Rudolph

Mason Rudolph won’t steal Purdy’s spot, but he can make some magic happen. He went 1-4 last season, but he also went 3-0 in 2023. He is still 30 years old, so he could have a career turnaround in the right offense.

There is a fine combination of young and old signal-callers on this list. I believe each QB on this post has the ability to maintain a .500 record until Purdy comes back. The 49ers still have Shanny calling the shots and CMAC (who won OPOY in 2023) in the lineup.
