Is the loss of Ben Johnson holding back the Lions?

Where is the savior?

By: Jake Rajala

The Detroit Lions got bullied by the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. They were horrid on offense and defense. Well, I’m going to discuss the offense.

The Lions only scored 13 points in Week 1. Guess how many times the Lions scored 13 or fewer points last season. The answer is zero. Yes, you read that correctly. Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders certainly do not approve.

This raises the question: Do they really miss former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson?

The Lions were first in points per game last season. All they did was average 33.1 PPG!

It may even sound sad to hear that the Lions swept the Packers last season and averaged 29 points between the two contests.

Of course, Johnson went to become the head coach at the Chicago Bears. He didn’t drop 50 points in Week 1, but he did score 24 points. He has a young QB in Caleb Williams, who is still developing.

The Ben Johnson-led Bears play in Detroit in Week 2. Amon Ra. St Brown has already said that he expects boos to come from the crowd.

So, a pivotal question arises: how can they replace Johnson? They clearly miss him. I wouldn’t be blindsided if Campbell gets more involved with the play-calling. He may want to get physical and see them run the ball more. They can control the clock and make deep throws at the right moments. Plus, they have a serious, impressive RB tandem with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

They should never put the blame on Dan Campbell if they continue to struggle. He has built a culture and roster that was once at the bottom of the league. He has flexed his dominance by creating an offense that has the guts to go for it on 4th down.

We’ve seen Josh McDaniels get fired from head coaching gigs and then return to the Pats. Perhaps fans will wish that Johnson gets relieved of his duties in Chi-town and then has a welcome back party with the Lions.
