Could CJ Stroud ever lose the starting gig?

Could CJ Stroud ever get benched?

By: Jake Rajala

The former second overall pick, CJ Stroud, had an admirable rookie season. He threw 23 touchdowns to five interceptions. This led him to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

He had a mild sophomore slump. He threw 20 touchdowns and 12 ints. It wasn’t daunting, to say the least.

His start to the 2025 season, hasn’t proven his doubters wrong. He only led his offense to score 9 points. Stroud only had 188 passing yards, zero TDs, and an int. The Los Angeles Rams are a quality team, but they aren’t quite as potent as the Philadelphia Eagles or Kansas City Chiefs.

PFF has given Stroud a grade of 73.1 in Week 1, which is 16th among QBs.

The Texans were unable to hang with the heavy weights in 2024. His offense scored 2 points against the Chiefs, 14 points in their second showdown against the KC Chiefs.

His ability can’t be doubted, but he hasn’t been on fire since his rookie season. Not only has he struggled to regain rookie form, but he’s playing in front of a QB who has a plethora of potential, in Davis Mills. Mills didn’t win many games, but he has flashed play-making ability in his limited time playing.

I believe that Stroud is on a short leash. He hasn’t been a stat machine or a clutch QB. We’ve witnessed the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts switch QBs this past offseason. It would be the perfect time to switch QBs.

If Stroud starts out 1-3, I’m throwing Mills into the starting lineup. Mills doesn’t have to feel as nervous as he did last time. He has a potent defense and an offense with Nick Chubb, Nico Collins, and Christian Kirk, and Dalton Schultz.
