Bill Belichick vs Vince Lombardi: who has the edge?

Belichick vs Lombardi

By: Jake Rajala

The two greatest head football coaches are arguably Vince Lombardi and Bill Belichick. The question is: which one has the edge?

Losing didn’t exactly ring a bell for Lombardi. He had a couple of modest seasons in the beginning, as he went 7-5 and then 8-4 in his first two seasons. In his third season, he proved he was special. He won a World Championship in his third season, and he didn’t look back. He won the World Championship in his fourth season, in his seventh season, eighth season, and ninth season.

Not only did Lombardi find a heap of success, but he changed the game. He created the Packers sweep, which showed off the speed of a running back on the edge.

Belichick had ups and downs in the beginning of his career. He was fired by the Cleveland Browns, after failing to be a consistent, competitive team. When he joined the Pats, he went 5-11 in his first season. There were plenty of reasons for Robert Kraft to axe him.

In his second season as a Patriot, Bill won a Super Bowl. A fella by the name of Tom Brady came around and helped him reach many more Super Bowls. They won six Super Bowls together!

The Lombardi trophy could easily be named “The Belichick trophy”. I have to respect his success as a HC. With that said, I don’t love how he performed without Brady. He wasn’t able to create a team that competes against elite teams.

Brady was also the best QB of all time. He showed this by winning without Belichick in his first season in Tampa Bay.

I have to give the edge to Lombardi. Not only was Lombardi quite succesful, but he found gold by only coaching the Pack for 9 seasons. Meanwhile, BB was around the Pats for 24 seasons!

It will be fascinating to see how BB does with his new team in CFB. It will likely take some time to rebuild the program. I and the rest of the football world would have enjoyed to see Lombardi work longer with Washington.
