Is Mac Jones the NFL’s best backup QB?

Who is the NFL’s best backup QB?

By: Jake Rajala

The former New England Patriots first round pick, Mac Jones, has been playing at a high level as of late. He dropped four touchdowns against a stingy Saints defense in Week 2. He then led his team to victory in Week 3. I don’t believe he’s Steve Young, but he appears to be a quality QB2 right now.

A fair question surrounds him: Is he the NFL’s best QB2?

In Week 3, Jones only threw one TD, but he converted 20 completions on 21 passes. He had an 80.7 PFF grade, which is admirable.

I have to say that he’s the best backup QB. The likes of Jaxson Dart or Shedeur Sanders may have talent, but they don’t quite have the same experience.

It helps Jones shine, as he gets to play under Kyle Shanahan, and have a defense that can slow down foes. Of course, Nick Bosa is out for the year, so their is a loss of talent.

Let’s not forget that Jones is still quite young, as he’s 27 years old. Sam Darnold was 27 when he turned things around with the Minnesota Vikings last season.

Jones should be able to be in consideration for a starting gig in the 2026 offseason, if he chooses.

Jones made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, but he failed to shine afterward. I’d like to see him play in a new, shiny scheme. The Saints would make a lot of sense for him.

I just can’t see the 49ers leaving their well-paid QB on the bench (Brock Purd) while they start Jones. Plus, Purdy has impressed in the regular season and playoffs.

Jones may have flashed the most potential among QB2s, but that doesn’t mean he can be consistent over a long period of time.
