Montana vs Young
By: Jake Rajala
Joe Montana and Steve Young are two Hall of Fame quarterbacks who both played for the San Francisco 49ers. Young was even the backup to Montana for a few seasons.
Montana lit up the scoreboard in the regular season and in the playoffs. He won MVP twice and he won four Super Bowls. He wasn’t only productive in SF. He played his final two seasons in a Chiefs uniform. He wasn’t washed up in KC, as he made the Pro Bowl and went 8-3 in his first Chiefs season.
I would have liked to see him lead the league in touchdowns or passing yards more.
Young wasn’t quite able to hit the ground running in SF until 1992. When he did start playing at a high level, he was magic. He went 14-2 in his first full season in SF. He won MVP twice and made seven consecutive Pro Bowls. He led the league in passing touchdowns in four instances. Don’t forget that he was a quality rushing QB.
Young won two Super Bowls as a backup, but he did win one as a starter. This came in 1995. Young and Jerry Rice were the golden duo. The 49ers have reached the Super Bowl a few times since 1995, but they have failed to win it all.
The ultimate question is: which QB has the edge?
I hope Young fans forgive me for saying this: Montana is the better QB. He was a winner and he’s been a regular season god. He reminds me a lot of Aaron Rodgers, except Montana had Bill Walsh in his corner.
Young reminds me a lot of Russell Wilson. They both are clutch, and they can make plays with their legs when they have to.
Montana also showed his ability to shine with a new system in a short amount of time. We witnessed Tom Brady also do this by dominating with the Bucs a year after leaving the Pats.
