Selling A.J. Brown right now?
By: Jake Rajala
The former Tennessee Titan A.J. Brown was once seen as a Top-3 wide receiver. Well, The Times They Are A-Changin. He is coming off a game where he had two catches for seven yards. Yikes.
Brown has had two games below three points. He only has had one game above 10 pts. He is the 47th best WR right now.
With that enunciated, a pivotal question arises: when is it wise to tell Brown?
Right now.
I don’t love the outlook for Brown, to say the least. It’s bizarre that he is started by 91% of fantasy owners. I have more faith in Travis Hunter, and he doesn’t even have a game above 10 pts. Let it also be known that Devonta Smith is ranked higher than Brown.
Brown can read all day long, but that doesn’t change the fact that Jalen Hurts hasn’t been pushing the ball deep down the field. Furthermore, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert need to be fed. Of course, Saquon Barkley requires a workload – as he’s fourth in the league in carries right now.
It isn’t that Brown isn’t getting attention. He had 9 targets in Week 4. Yet, he had 2.7 pts.
Brown also has 1 TD on the season. This comes after he had seven last season.
PFF may owe everybody an apology. Last May, PFF ranked Brown as the best WR in the entire league. Yes, you read that correctly.
Brown was on a different level in 2024. He recorded 1,079 yards and he did so in 13 games! Hurts was 20th in passing yards last season, too. Clearly, Brown knows how to perform well with less than average passing yardage from his QB.
If Brown is washed up at the age of 28, the question is: How much should an owner of Brown ask for him? I would want a second round pick. It’s unclear when or how Brown can turn things around.
I don’t foresee Brown getting traded by Philly, especially with them being undefeated. They also have a young, impressive defense. Furthermore, they have a stout OL with some younger figures. Hence, it wouldn’t be worth it for Philly to get draft picks for Brown.
Barkley has had fewer than 90 yards rushing in each game this season. That could spell an uptick in passes, especially for Brown. I don’t see Hurts transcending into a Top-10 QB in passing yards, but it could create some more reps in the pass game.
