Trade Mike Evans in dynasty?
By: Jake Rajala
The sad news has come to fruition: Six-time Pro Bowl selection Mike Evans broke his collarbone, and he’s more than likely out for the remainder of the season. Evans was nearly his normal self before the injury. He had 10, 10, and 13 points in the first few weeks. He didn’t light up the scoreboard early in the season, as he was well covered and opened up things for others, to say the least.
His future is quite murky. He’s 32 years old and he’s on a WR chart that has 2025 first round pick Emeka Egbuka garnering a lot of targets. After all, Emeka had 23, 12.9, and 14.5 points in his first weeks. Simple enough, he outplayed the veteran WR.
It’s a rare sight to see Evans play like an average wideout. He’s recorded at least 1k yards in each season. He’s also had at least five 12+ TD seasons. Yes, you read that correctly.
On the bright side, Baker has a lot of arm talent, and he should be a Buccaneer for life. As long as Baker is around, Evans should feel comfortable with enough production to be a top-end WR2 (as Emeka will be the WR1) in the offense.
So, what would it take to move on from Evans in a dynasty league?
I’d honestly want a second and slightly above average WR for him. I foresee Evans still playing a few more seasons. Even if he loses a burst, he should be a red zone threat and average around 10 TDs in a season. Chris Godwin has also suffered from numerous injuries over the past few seasons. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Godwin was injured again, which would really open it up for Evans.
I don’t believe that Evans will be a Pro Bowl-caliber WR anymore. I would say he will have similar production as Chris Olave, who averages around 12 points per game.
Baker is seventh right now in passing attempts. He wants to be leaned on in big moments. He had 50 passing attempts against the Detroit Lions in Week 7.
Evans is a future Hall of Famer and he’s already 32. There won’t be any discussion about whether he left it all on the field. As a Saints fan, I miss the rivlary between Evans and Marshon Lattimore. I will also miss Evans being reliable and stretching the field when he hangs it up.
Evans stuck around to play with the GOAT Tom Brady for a Super Bowl run. Well, Baker is playing at an MVP-level. Perhaps Baker’s rise to dominance can make Evans wish to stay for the remainder of his career.
There will be some players that will see an increased role. Besides Godwin and Egbuka getting an uptick in targets, Cade Otton should see more action his way. He failed to have double digit points until Week 5. In Week 5, he had 12 points, 10 points in Week 6, and 13.5 points in Week 7.
