Is Rivers joining the Colts?
By: Jake Rajala
The ole, gunslinger, Phillip Rivers, might just be returning to the NFL. The 44 year old (which is four years younger than Tom Brady), is working out with the Indianapolis Colts. This all comes from Daniel Jones suffering a season ending injury.
So, the question begs to ask: Is Rivers joining the Colts?
Not yet.
Rivers hasn’t played since 2020. Of course, there was a moment where Kyle Shanahan flirted with the idea of signing Rivers in 2023, if they had advanced to the Super Bowl.
So does Rivers have a fighting chance of returning to the NFL, or has he hung around Tom Brady and Brett Favre too much? I don’t believe it’s wise to bring him back. Sure, I’d prefer Rivers over someone like Cam Newton or Curtis Painter, but he is an injury waiting to happen.
Someone might point out that Aaron Rodgers is still playing in the league, so why can’t Rivers? Not only did Aaron Rodgers train in the offseason to prepare for a full slate of games, but he just turned 42, which his younger than Rivers.
It’s unfortunate that the trade deadline has passed and they can’t trade for someone like Joe Flacco or Jameis Winston. Well, this doesn’t mean that it’s fine to give a “grandpa”, also known as Rivers, as the answer. I’d like to see the Colts give Taylor Heinicke a try out. He sort of is like a poor man’s version of Daniel Jones. He also isn’t as old as Newton (36) or Rivers.
If we are being very odd, it may not be a terrible idea to give Kap a workout. He has actually stayed in shape since he left the league. The Colts could use the legs from Kap and he may even help Jonathan Taylor in the read option game.
Rivers also needs to decide if he wants to wait longer to hear his name called for Canton, as he is likely a first ballot Hall of Famer. Furthermore, he needs to be convinced that there is a quality plan for him, as he would hate to return to the league, and miss the playoffs (or get injured).
