Colts QB outlook
By: Jake Rajala
It’s not too late. The Indianapolis Colts can still bring a quarterback that’s not 44 years old and hasn’t played since 2020. With that said, I’m going to lay out a few new QB options for the Colts.
Ryan Tannehill
Ryan Tannehill is seven years younger than Rivers. Tanny is 37, so he should have some gas left in the tank for a season or two. The former Tennessee Titans QB went 6-6 in 2022, but 12-4 in 2021, and 11-5 in 2020. He could also make plays with his legs, which surely can’t be said by Rivers.
Cam Newton
Cam Newton isn’t dead. He can still make some magic happen. He went 0-5 with the Carolina Panthers, but he was set up to fail. Newton has stayed in shape, and he still has a freak combination of size and speed. He has expressed his frustration with the Colts picking Rivers over him.
Colin Kaepernick
Yes, Kap is wildly unpopular in the eyes of millions of football fans. You still can’t resist his speed and arm strength. After all, he did bring the 49ers to the Super Bowl, even if it was ages ago. The read option game with Kap and Jonathan Taylor would be cooking.
Honorable Mention:
Drew Brees
Yes, I made fun of Rivers for being old, but Drew Brees is the exception. He may have a burnt-out throwing shoulder, but he can still read defenses and make short passes. We witnessed Peyton Manning win a Super Bowl by way of handing the ball off, and making some magic happen in the play-action game. Brees is 46 years old, which may seem funny that he is even older than Rivers!
The Colts don’t need to have a QB come in and play like a Pro Bowler. They have the league’s top running back in Jonathan Taylor and WRs that can make plays in space, such as Alec Pierce and Michael Pittman Jr. They still need a somewhat competitive QB, as they play against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans, who are a pair of teams that could make the playoffs.
