Is Darnell Washington good?

The rise of Darnell Washington

By: Jake Rajala

Darnell Washington is a behemoth. He is 311 pounds at the tight end spot. Every time he touches ball, everybody hears about his weight as a TE. He put up 21 reps of 225 at the combine, so we know he’s also strong. With that said, the real question is: Is Darnell Washington good?

Washginton isn’t Gronk, or Heath Miller, but he is an underrated weapon in the Steelers offense. He has notched 313 yards this season. Let it be known that he didn’t have any catches in his first three games. His season high receiving yard game was against the Bengals, where he unleashed 67 yards. I would like to see him have more touchdowns, as he only has one TD on the season. It’s surprising that he isn’t thrown to more in the red zone with his size.

Darnell was a third round pick by the Steelers. It’s okay that he hasn’t been a Pro Bowler in year one. George Kittle only had 515 yards in his rookie season. Furthermore, Travis Kelce had 0 receiving yards as a rookie.

With George Pickens in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, they need to find production from lesser known weapons. We all know DK Metcalf is a Pro Bowl-caliber weapon, but he isn’t Megatron.

We know Aaron Rodgers feels comfortable spreading it around to him. If A-Rod retires, it’s hard to tell if the new Steelers QB will throw it to him. It’s at least obvious he will be a big target for any QB.
