5 backup QB targets for the Chiefs in 2026

Backup QB targets for the Chiefs

By: Jake Rajala

Patrick Mahomes recently tore his ACL. It isn’t the first time he’s been injured. With that said, I believe they need to take the QB2 spot more serious this offseason. Hence, I’m going to lay out five backup QB targets in 2026.

Spencer Rattler

Spencer Rattler is sort of a poor man’s version of Patrick Mahomes. Not only do they look alike, but they have incredible arm talent. With Tyler Shough as the future starter in the Big Easy, they could look to move Rattler for draft picks. Then they could also bring a veteran in to help Shough.

Malik Willis

Malik Willis has proven to be a reliable QB2 for the Green Bay Packers. He stepped in nicely for Jordan Love last Saturday. He recorded an 81.8 completion percentage and he threw a touchdown. When the defense thought they had him in their grasp, he used his legs to escape.

Mitchell Trubisky

Mitchell Trubisky has proven to be successful as a starting QB in this league. He once brought the Bears to an 11-3 record in his second season. In an offense under Andy Reid with a few explosive weapons, he should be more than average.

Kenny Pickett

Kenny Pickett isn’t a slouch. He went 7-5 as a rookie and 7-5 in his second season. He has a lot of potential. After all, the Steelers selected him in the first round. He is on a Raiders team that is abysmal, so I will give him a pass.

Zach Wilson

Zach Wilson could be a late bloomer, just as Sam Darnold is. They both were in a wretched situation in the Big Apple, too. Wilson is only 26 years old, which is the same as the rookie, Tyler Shough. Wilson should be highly motivated to succeed after the Dolphins decided to start Quinn Ewers.

I outlined many unique QBs on this list. I don’t love Gardner Minshew, who stepped in for Mahomes and threw an awful interception. We know that he was run out of Philadelphia. Hopefully, Mahomes doesn’t suffer another season ending injury. If he does, they should be more prepared than right now.
