The Saints must improve these positions
By: Jake Rajala
The New Orleans Saints finished 4-1 in their past five contest. Under Tyler Shough, they went 5-4. It’s safe to say they believe he’s their answer at their most critical position: quarterback. With that said, I’m going to unfold five positions the Saints need to improve.
Running back
Alvin Kamara is washed up. I said it. PFF ranked him as the worst RB in the league this season. He doesn’t have the same juice or elusiveness that he once had. The RB2 Kendre Miller has been up and down. It’s impressive that Shough has played well with a below average RB, which makes the play-action game tougher to operate.
Defensive Tackle
Bryan Bresee is quite explosive and he has a wicked spin move. I’d still love to see more beef at their DT spot. Davon Godchaux is a fine DT to rotate in with the second team, but he’s not a Pro Bowl-caliber DT by any stretch. The Saints were 19th in rushing YPG allowed.
Middle Linebacker
Demario Davis is still playing at a high level. Nonetheless, let’s be honest. He is 37 years old! He will most likely retire this offseason or the next. Even if he stays, they could use another playmaker at MLB. Pete Werner is a C+ at the MLB Spot. I want to see a B+ across from Davis.
Left Guard
The Saints are stout up front. They have Erik McCoy, who is arguably a Top-3 center when he’s healthy. They also have Kelvin Banks at LT, who had a superb rookie season. Taliese Fuaga has also taken positive steps at the right tackle spot. Cesar Ruiz is also a modest RG, as he ranks 13th in pass protection via PFF. I’d love to see more talent at LG, where Torricelli Simpkins reigns.
Wide Receiver
For some reason, the Saints shipped one of the most dangerous WRs in space, who was 27 years old, to the Seattle Seahawks. They also let Brandin Cooks leave. They need a WR2 across from Chris Olave. No, Taysom Hill isn’t the answer.
