Reflecting on Eric Bieniemy returning to the Chiefs
By: Jake Rajala
The Kansas City Chiefs were missing a spark on offense last season. Patrick Mahomes no longer looked like an All-Pro QB. They didn’t have any weapons that were overly scary, too. They didn’t have a 1k+ yard weapon. Travis Kelce led the Chiefs in receiving yards with 851 yards. He also led the offense in catches with 76.
The Chiefs finished 20th in PPG! The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers had more PPG than them.
One of the ways they are striding to improve on offense from 2025 is to bring back Eric Bieniemy. Eric was one of the best offensive coordinators under Andy Reid in his prior Chiefs tenure. The duo won multiple Super Bowls together. He spent last season under Ben Johnson in Chi-town. He was the running back coach and D’Andre Swift was his guy. He unleashed 1,087 rushing yards and 4.9 YPC. He also had nine rushing touchdowns!
With that said, what is the grading of the signing?
I have to give the Chiefs a B+ for this move. Eric is sharp, creative, and familiar with the Chiefs. They still kept Big Red and managed to improve the offensive outlook. The only issue I have is that they didn’t get someone like Mike McDaniel or Brian Daboll. I’d slot them ahead of Eric.
I’d still love to see Eric have a ton of success in KC and then finally garner an HC role. He’s more than deserved an HC gig. It’s laughable that people say he isn’t good at interviews.
The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. They needed to make massive changes. I believe it’s time to improve their weapons for their next step, to be honest. Then, hopefully, they can be the AFC bully that they once were.
