Grading the McCarthy signing

Outlook on the McCarthy signing

By: Jake Rajala

It’s official: the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed Mike McCarthy to be their next head coach. I absolutely love this move. McCarthy knows what it takes to win. He had three straight 12 win seasons in Dallas. The decision to let McCarthy leave was as confusing as the decision to pardon Micah Parsons. McCarthy has been with impressive organizations, such as the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers.

With McCarthy there, I believe it’s a better chance that Aaron Rodgers returns to “The Steel City”, as there’s some chemistry there. They still have Teryl Austin, who has done an admirable job of running the defense. Their D ranked sixth in sacks last season. However, they ranked 26th in YPG allowed. They tend to bend and not break.

So, the ultimate question is: what grade would I give the McCarthy signing? I would give it an A-.

McCarthy is one of the best available offensive coaches in my opinion. If they are contempt with Austin on defense, it makes sense to go in this direction. I would say Klint Kubiak is the only offensive mind that I would take over McCarthy. I’d also say that plucking Bill Belichick or Deion Sanders out of CFB to coach in the NFL would also be more impressive.

McCarthy has a Super Bowl ring, so he knows what it takes to win in the playoffs. It’s been automatic for the Steelers when it comes to making the playoffs. The issue has been winning playoff games. This is why it makes sense for Tomlin and the Steelers to part ways.

As previously noted, Rodgers may be interested in reunited with McCarthy. I’d love to see the Steelers not only win their division, but go all the way in the AFC. They need to take advantage of the Chiefs struggling to find their identity in the AFC and the Ravens struggling to be consistent in the AFC North.
