Grading the Jonathan Gannon signing with Packers

Gannon signing with the Packers reflection

By: Jake Rajala

Jonathan Gannon goes from being an head coach with a losing team in a brutal NFC West division to a defensive coordinator with a superb team in the NFC North. Of course, I’m talking about the Green Bay Packers.

Some may say it was a mistake to make Gannon the DC. After all, the Cardinals didn’t exactly have a potent defense last season. They ranked 29th in PPG allowed and 20th in takeaways. To be fair, he hasn’t exactly had the most talent on his defensive unit. Patrick Peterson, J.J. Watt or Chandler Jones weren’t there to help him.

He is working with a Green Bay Packers defense that has Micah Parsons, Rashan Gary, Quay Walker, and many other assassins. The Packers ranked 11th in PPG allowed, 14th in YPG allowed, and 20th in sacks. So, there’s room to improve for the Pack.

So, the ultimate question is: What is the grade of Gannon signing with the Packers?

I would give them a B+. Gannon may not be the same defensive mind as Dan Quinn or even Bill Belichick. Nonetheless, he has created an elite defense at some point in his past. His 2022 Eagles defense ranked second in YPG and fourth in PPG allowed.

They have had not the best of luck with head coaches coming over to be coordinators. Mike Pettine went from an HC to a DC with the Pack in 2018. They were 18th in YPG allowed in 2018 and 2019.

Gannon should really benefit from Parsons in his unit. He will have Parsons playing at a DPOY-like level. Mark my words. Hopefully, his defense can slow down the Detroit Lions offense, as the Lions scored 31 and 27 points in each of the two showdowns.
