Will the 49ers sign Joey Bosa?
It sounds like a dream scenario, but it’s getting more realistic as the offseason kicks off. Joey Bosa could join his younger brother, Nick Bosa. Joey is a free agent. He only had five sacks, but he also had five forced fumbles (which led the league)! He also had 16 QB hits and nine TFLs.He had a PFF grade of 79.3 last season, which was modest. So, we realize that Joey is impressive. Well, the 49ers could really use his help.
The 49ers ranked dead last in sacks last season. Ouch. They need more edge rush help. To make matters worse, Nick is injury-prone. He only played in two games in his second season, 14 games in 2024, and three games last season. He has won Defensive Player of the Year, but his injuries may wear him down from returning to that level.
Joey isn’t only the missing piece, but he can join a team that could be in the Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills have consistently failed to get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl. The Chargers (Bosa’s former team) were far from perfect in their playoff trip, as well.
There have been “rumors” of the 49ers trying to acquire Maxx Crosby. They would really have to cough up a lot of draft picks for him. Outside of Crosby, there is Trey Hendrickson in free agency. However, I feel he will return to Cincy. Khalil Mack is also available, but he’s even older (as he’s 34) than Bosa. Haason Reddick is also an option, but he has 3.5 sacks in his past two seasons combined.
The 49ers also don’t have Robert Saleh, so that will be an obstacle for them to overcome. I hope they can find another DC that will have more pass rush help and will brew up new ways to chase down opposing QBs.
