Best landing spots for Derek Carr

Best destinations for Derek Carr

By: Jake Rajala

It’s been widely reported that former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr would come out of retirement to join a “Super Bowl contender”. The door is obviously shut on him returning to the Saints as they have the 2025 rookie sensation Tyler Shough, and then the Las Vegas Raiders will most likely have Fernando Mendoza. With that said, I’m going to lay out the best fits for him.

Minnesota Vikings

The former Michigan Wolverines legend, J.J. McCarthy, is far from the answer at QB for the Vikings. I believe they need to get creative to find a quality QB. Carr should be intrigued of the idea of being a Viking. They have Justin Jefferson, who is arguably a Top-3 WR. Somehow, he recorded 1k yards with McCarthy last season. Kevin O’Connell is also a heck of an offensive mind. We’re talking about the average QB Kirk Cousins playing like a Pro Bowler under him. They managed to have a winning record with McCarthy last season. Their talent “around” their QB spot is impressive.

Houston Texans

Derek could follow in his brother’s (David) footsteps by joining the Texans. Hopefully, he has a better experience than David. The Texans have a Top-3 defense, which is led by Danielle Hunter (15 sacks) and Will Anderson (12 sacks). On offense, they have Nico Collins and Joe Mixon. I would like to see the Texans add 1-2 more pieces on offense. CJ Stroud should be worried about stability, after he threw four interceptions in the divsional round.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts should have called Derek before Philip Rivers, in my opinion. Carr could take the Colts offense to another level. They already have Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. Daniel Jones may not be a safe answer at QB for the Colts, as he’s been hurt or average throughout his career.

Miami Dolphins

Carrr is a better option than Tua Tagovailoa, who threw 15 interceptions before getting benched. Carr should be delighted with the weapons that the Dolphins have. Tyreek Hill is an elite WR, Jaylen Waddle is a Pro Bowl caliber wideout, De’Von Achane is explosive and versatile. Hopefully, they bring back Darren Waller, who had six touchdowns in nine games last season. The Phins need to find a way to keep up with Drake Maye, who was second in MVP votes in 2025, and with Josh Allen, who was the MVP in 2024.

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are arguably the least likely QB needy team that Carr would consider. Nonetheless, they do need a QB. They have Jerry Jeudy and David Njoku. On defense, we know they can compete. They have Myles Garrett, who won DPOY in 2025. They also have the DROY, Carson Schwesinger. Mason Graham also has freak potential.
