Best RB targets for the Texans
By: Jake Rajala
The Houston Texans need help at their running back spot. They are moving on from Nick Chubb, and Joe Mixon has a “freak medical condition”. It’s unclear how he will bounce back. With that said, I’m going to lay out the best RB targets for the Texans.
David Montgomery
I previously wrote that the Texans would be the best fit for David Montgomery. I’m standing by that claim. It won’t be easy for the Texans to get Kenneth Walker or Travis Etienne. I believe they need to get creative if they want a true bell-cow, versatile RB. Hence, they should trade for a RB. Montgomery is 28 years old, so he should have 2-3 more seasons of modest performance.
Alvin Kamara
I wouldn’t be blindsided if the Saints traded away Alvin Kamara. After all, they once traded away Jimmy Graham (in his prime). Kamara needs a change in scenery. He was ranked as the 54th best RB by PFF last season. Kamara isn’t the same RB he was when he ran for 5 touchdowns or broke a few tackles in space.
Rico Dowdle
Rico Dowdle is a realistic target in free agency for the Texans. He ran for 1k+ rushing yards last season. He is also 27 years old, so he isn’t nearly burnt out yet. Dowdle also had 39 catches on the season, so he’s capable of being a receiving threat and catching screens and RB option routes.
Javonte Williams
Javonte Williams may be the hardest RB to acquire for the Texans. He unleashed 1,201 rushing yards (ninth in the league), 4.8 YPC, and 11 rushing touchdowns (seventh in the league). He was one of the biggest surprises, after he recorded 513 rushing yards in the season before. Williams is also 25, so he’s one of the youngest FA RBs.
Jonathan Taylor
I need to have one dream target on this list. JT didn’t finish strong, to say the least. In his last five games, he didn’t record over 4.0 YPC in any of the games. He was often hit in the backfield, so he couldn’t get into a flow. The Texans could cough up a few early draft picks for his services. The biggest reason against this trade occuring is that the Texans and Colts play in the same division.
Honorable Mention:
Tyler Allgeier
Tyler Allgeier sits as a RB2 behind a Top-5 RB in Bijan Robinson. Allgeier could be a 1k+ yard RB in the right situation. After all he had 1k+ rushing yards in his rookie season. He has failed to repeat that feat. He has never fumbled the ball, and he also had eight rushing touchdowns last season. Furthermore, he is 25 years old, just like Javonte.
