Will David Montgomery be traded?

David Montgomery has been a splendid RB2 in Detroit. Of course, he is the backup to Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery recorded 716 rushing yards, eight rushing touchdowns, and averaged 4.5 YPC in 2025. He had a PFF grade of 75.3, which is average. With that said, there have been a lot of rumors around him being traded. So, I’m going to lay out sharp trade destinations for him.
Houston Texans
The Nick Chubb train isn’t real. He unleashed 506 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. It’s been widely reported that Chubb won’t be back with the Texans, as well. Joe Mixon’s future is up in the air, as he is battling a “freak medical condition”. It makes too much sense for the Texans to add a star RB. The Texans are also a very talented team, especially on defense. They managed to reach the divisional round last season.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints were at their best running the ball with Alvin Kamara AND Mark Ingram. Their old 1-2 punch was impressive, to say the least. Well, Montgomery is similar to Ingram. Furthermore, Kamara hasn’t thrived as a “bell-cow’ RB. Kamara can stay fresh and shine more in the passing game, with David being the lead RB in the rushing attack.
Philadelphia Eagles
Saquon Barkley may have been hurt by the Madden curse. He was not that dazzling in comparison to his 2024 self. He only had four 100+ rushing yard games in 2025. The Eagles love to mow down front sevens with their running game. I believe they need a little more help to do that. They were 16th in rushing YPG in 2025, after being second in rushing YPG in 2024.
Kansas City Chiefs
Kareem Hunt has been a bull dozer at RB for the Kansas City Chiefs. Well, he is a free agent in 2026. I’d love to see the Chiefs replace Hunt, who is 30 years old. He only had 611 rushing yards and averaged 3.7 YPC last season. Hunt only had one game with over 100 rushing yards. Ouch. The Chiefs were 24th in rushing yards in 2025.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders are certainly the worst team on this list. They do appear to be headed in the right direction, however. They brought in Klint Kubiak. They also have the first overall pick, which will most likely be Fernando Mendoza. Ashton Jeanty had some success last season, but he could use a partner. After all, the Raiders were 32nd in rushing YPG. Kenneth Walker won Super Bowl MVP under Kubiak. Montgomery should be intrigued by the offensive design for the RBs by Kubiak.
Honorable Mention:
San Francisco 49ers
The offensive genius Kyle Shanahan knows that you can never have too many running backs. The 49ers alpha RB, Christian McCaffrey, won Comeback Player of the Year last season. He’s quite the all-purpose back. I believe Montgomery can be the 3rd and short RB. He is more powerful than CMAC.
