Grading the New York Jets first round picks

Jets first round picks

By: Jake Rajala

The New York Jets had three first round picks last night! They drafted an edge rusher second overall, a tight end 16th overall, and then a wide receiver 30th overall. So, the question is: what are their draft grades?

I love their first and second first round pick. I wasn’t a fan of them drafting a WR with their third first round pick. I believe they should have reached for a QB. Geno Smith can’t be their day 1 starter if they want to make the playoffs next season or the season after that.

So, what are the grades for their picks?

David Bailey: A

I love the pick by David Bailey. He reminds me a ton of Von Miller with his raw power. He was compared to the current Denver Broncos edge rusher Nik Bonnito by Lance Zierlein. He was the most productive edge rusher in college. His 4.50 40 yard dash was quite impressive. It’s faster than Jadeveon Clowney’s 40 yard dash.

Kenyon Sadiq: A-

Kenyon Sadiq can be the next Vernon Davis or Kyle Pitts. He’s a freak athlete (and that’s an understatement) He reminds me of “former Oregon Duck” Juwan Johnson with their ability to high point a football. Kenyon ran a 4.39 40 yard dash! Yes, you read that correctly. The NFL analyst, Lance, compared him to Trey McBride. Hence, he’s in good company thus far.

Omar Cooper: C+

Omar Cooper can be a solid WR2 in this league. I’m not buying his upside too much. He had an athletic score of 75, which was 18th among WRs. I believe he was a bit of a reach. If they are going to reach, I wish it was for a QB. The former LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier could compete against Smith for the job right now. The Jets have the 12th pick in the second round. It won’t be easy for them to acquire a QB.

The Jets have made some very impressive moves on defense this offseason. They acquired Demario Davis in free agency and Minkah Fitzpatrick via a trade. I’d like to see them target a CB in round two and three.
