What should the Steelers do right now?
By: Jake Rajala
The Pittsburgh Steelers beefed up in round one with the pick of offensive lineman Max Iheanachor and then brought in more firepower in round two with wide receiver Germie Bernard. Then they made a polarizing pick in round three with quarterback Drew Allar.
With that said, a pivotal question arises: what are the goals right now?
- QB
It’s quite glaring. The Steelers need an answer at the quarterback spot right now. Drew Allar has potential, but I don’t believe he will have similar instant success as Tyler Shough, Cam Ward, or Jaxson Dart will have last season. The Steelers are waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision. I really believe they should have brought in a veteran, versus guessing if Rodgers wanted to come back. I also would have liked to see the Steelers pick Garrett Nussmeier. We witnessed the Browns draft two QBs last season and the Commanders famously pick Kirk Cousins and RG3 in the same draft.
- DL
I hate that the Steelers didn’t pick a defensive lineman until round 6. They must realize that Cam Heyward will retire “very” soon. Furthermore, It’s unclear if T.J. Watt will retire soon. We all saw Aaron Donald retire in his prime. Even J.J. Watt had some gas left in the tank when he walked away. The Steelers also face Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson in their division. It’s crucial that they have a pass rush that can get home.
- TE
I love the effort and strength by the 300+ pound Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. However, they could use another sure handed TE. I’m not asking them to take Gronk out of retirement. They missed their shot at pairing Conner Heyward with Cam. They also couldn’t get Travis Kelce. I’d be excitied for them if they added David Njoku. Zach Ertz and Taysom Hill are other fine choices, too.
It was a miracle that the Steelers made the playoffs last season. They need less luck and more effort if they want to make a legit run at winning another Super Bowl. With A-Rod, they hold a serious shot at winning their division. If they can’t win his heart, I’d love to see them trade for a gifted, veteran QB.
