Was Cousins a steal this offseason?
By: Jake Rajala
Kirk Cousins, otherwise known as “Captain Kirk”, moved on from Atlanta Falcons and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason. Cousins may be 37, but I believe he still has a lot of arm talent. It seems forgotten that he went 5-3 with the Falcons a season ago. He also threw 10 touchdowns to five interceptions. I believe his season in 2024, where he threw 16 interceptions, should be erased from memory. Perhaps the Men in Black could help us not reminisce about that season.
Cousins is 37 years old. He isn’t young. However, he is seven years younger than Philip Rivers, who came back for a moment this past season. Rivers nearly led his team to a victory against the reigning Super Bowl Champion, Seattle Seahawks.
I believe there will be a competition between Cousins and Fernando Mendoza for the QB1 spot. It’s relaxing to know that these QBs support each other. If you don’t know what I mean, please watch the video below!
It’s not the end of the world if Cousins starts for a season. After all, Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady were backups as rookies in this league!
Cousins can thrive in the short passing game. Klint Kubiak loves to move skill players around and take down a defense with a thousand cuts. Let’s not forget he won the Super Bowl with the Seahawks last season, as the offensive coordinator.
Cousins was one of the best available “veteran” quarterbacks this offseason. He’s more talented than Russell Wilson, Trubisky, Mariota, and Minshew Mania. I would say he isn’t quite as potent as the 42 year old Aaron Rodgers. I’d say Cousins is more ready than Tom Brady, however.
The Raiders offense needs a very wise mind at QB, as they will have to be extra precise, given they don’t have WRs that can consistently win jump balls against a cornerback. The tight end Brock Bowers is elite, but he’s not going to carry an entire offense.
Cousins signed a five year deal with the Raiders. It’s very possible that he sticks around for a few years if he stands out in 2026.
