Reflecting on Josh Gordon
By: Jake Rajala
Josh Gordon was once a Top-5 WR in the National Football League. It’s more a mystery where he came from before his glory days with the Browns. Well, he was a second round pick in the Supplemental Draft. He played college football at Baylor University and then transferred to The University of Utah. Well, he never played a down at Utah.
Gordon unleashed 1,646 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in his second season. He produced this, despite missing a couple of games. His 1,646 yards were number one in the league. His teammate, Joe Thomas, joked that they should just throw hail maries to him all game.
He fell apart after his magical season. He only played in five games in 2014. Furthermore, his taste in drugs resulted in suspensions in 2015 and 2016. He almost got back on track in 2018, where he notched 720 yards. Then he went back down the roller coaster and had 426 yards and one TD in 2019. He decided that the benefit of weed out-weighed playing the game he loved and making millions of dollars.
He last played in 2022. He had more of a drop-off than Antonio Brown. Sure, AB didn’t play like a All-Pro with Tom Brady, but he did help win a Super Bowl.
Gordon averaged 117.6 YPC in 2013. AB has never averaged that much YPG. Not even Randy Moss or Larry Fitzgerald averaged that many YPG, as well.
Chris Carter was also a supplemental draft pick. Obviously, he sustained a high level of play over a long period of time. He made eight straight Pro Bowls. Carter made the Hall of Fame in 2013.
The big news regarding the supplemental draft is that they are not holding it this season. The stud that was supposed to come out of it was Brendan Sorsby, who played football at Texas Tech.
Miami Dolphins were labeled a quality fit. They have Malik Willis, but he has little experience for the team that drafted him (Packers). Also some competition never hurt anyone.
