Saints-Steelers trade for Spencer Rattler

Saints-Steelers trade on the horizon?

By: Jake Rajala

Spencer Rattler was once favored to be a first overall pick. Clearly, that didn’t come to fruition. He fell to the Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Rattler started last season. He had some “wow” moments. After all, his arm talent is off the charts. He threw eight touchdowns to five interceptions in eight starts. The big difference between Rattler and Tyler Shough isn’t their arm talent. Rather, it’s their poise. Shough was a third down conversion machine. Rattler wasn’t quite able to convert third and longs, or put a nice drive into the end zone for six.

With that said, the offense belongs to Shough. So, this leaves Rattler expendable. Well, I believe there is a perfect fit for him: Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rattler is a low-risk, high-reward for any team. I’d love to see the Steelers groom Rattler to start after Rodgers retires, instead of them throwing a 2027 rookie QB in the fire.

Rodgers could teach a thing or two to Rattler. Rodgers is able to throw a ball to a small window outside the pocket. They both thrive when they throw on the run.

The Steelers will likely have a late first round pick in 2027, too. It won’t be easy for them to find a QB like Tyler Shough or Shedeur Sanders beyond round one.

So, what would such a trade cost for the Steelers? Well, I’d imagine it would be a mid-round pick for Rattler. He isn’t quite worth a first or second round pick. However, he has shown more upside than many QBs under the age of 25.

It should be acknowledged that Rattler didn’t exactly have a quality group of weapons. Outside of Chris Olave, it was dim at the WR position. Alvin Kamara also proved to be a shell of his once self.

If the Saints trade away Rattler, they will have to find a new QB2. It won’t be easy to find a “young and talented” QB2. Shough also dealt with a few injuries in college. They really need to be prepared. I’d love to see them draft a QB in the third or fourth round.
