Replacements for Marcus Mariota
By: Jake Rajala
The former Oregon Duck Marcus Mariota has suffered a sprained MCL. I have to imagine that there is a fine chance that he isn’t ready for Week 1. If Jayden Daniels suffers an injury, they could be in big trouble. So, I’m going to lay out potential replacements for Mariota.
Mitchell Trubisky
Mitch should be more ready to be a starter this time around. He has learned a lot as a starter. After all, he sat behind the MVP Josh Allen. Mitch is also 31 years old, so he has a lot of gas left in the tank. Let’s not forget that Mitch once led his team an 11-3 record.
Will Levis
Will Levis has been up and down in his career. He threw 13 touchdowns to 12 interceptions last season. However, he also went 2-10 as the starter. He wasn’t in the best situation with the Tennessee Titans. He didn’t have Carnell Tate. At least he is 27 years old. He is only a year older than Tyler Shough.
Spencer Rattler
I have to imagine that Zach Wilson will take over the QB2 role on the Saints and surpass Spencer Rattler. Of course, Tyler Shough is the starter. Rattler has a lot of arm talent. He just sits in a room with two other gifted QBs. Rattler is like a slightly less athletic version of Mariota.
Davis Mills
Davis Mills was on another level last season. He went 3-0 and threw five touchdowns to one interception. He also didn’t play with Andre Johnson or DeAndre Hopkins. He is also 27 years old. Clearly, 27 years old is a hot spot to lure in QBs. He is flat-out a talented QB. Forget about his neck.
Gardner Minshew
I expect Gardner Minshew to be the third QB for the Arizona Cardinals. They have Jacoby Brissett and Carson Beck. Minshew Mania can still be an effective QB2 for a team, at the very least. He is 30 years old right now, so the door on his peak ability is closing.
Honorable Mention:
Russell Wilson
This one may seem like a pipe dream. However, Russell Wilson may be open to playing a couple of games. He isn’t completely washed up. He is 37 right now. His arm strength was effective in his final days. However, his escape ability out of the pocket in his late 30s wasn’t as dangerous as it was in his early years.
In the end, the Commanders need to be stable and effective at their QB spot. Not only is Mariota hurt, but Jayden Daniels has suffered injuries in the past. They need to be prepared to play at their QB2 spot.
